Amy wants to enjoy the sport while delivering the goods

PETALING JAYA: Sweet-faced national rhythmic gymnast Amy Kwan Dict Weng (pic) does not want to treat the Asian Games in Indonesia as her last – not when she is having the time of her life.

So far, it has been a great year for the 23-year-old Amy and she hopes to end the season with another strong showing at the Asiad starting tomorrow in Jakarta and Palembang.

“I’ve never thought that this Asian Games will be my swansong. I’m enjoying this sport and I just want to give another good show at the Games,” said Amy.

Amy started the year in sensational fashion when she stole the show at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games by sweeping a medal haul of 1-1-2 to emerge as the top performer.

Then, she kept the momentum going by surprising even herself after picking up a bronze in the ribbons apparatus in a challenging field at the Asian Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil in May.

It was a first senior medal in an Asian meet.

Amy knows winning a medal will be a monumental task in the Asiad, especially with giants such as China, Japan and Kazakhstan around but Amy promised to give a rousing show with the rest of her team members.

The others in the team are Izzah Amzan, Koi Sie Yan and Ng Jia Wen. They will be accompanied by Russian coach Lidia Legotina.

“The team have trained very hard for this Games. Each one of us has promised to give our best,” she said.

“The competitions will be really tough. In the Asian meet in April we saw how strong the other Asian countries were. It’ll be great to give them a good fight.”

As the rhythmic competition will only start on Aug 25, Amy and her teammates are on a wing and prayer to stay away from injuries.

“We’ll be joining the Malaysian contingent later but for now, we are focusing on our training at home,” she added.

At the last Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea four years ago, Malaysia were not represented as they were not deemed to be good enough. Only Wong Poh San was listed but she withdrew at the eleventh hour due to injuries.
