KAJANG: One long-standing issue that MCA’s candidate for the Balakong by-election Tan Chee Teong wishes to resolve is the perennial flooding along Jalan Sungai Chua here.

Jalan Sungai Chua, the main road connecting the SILK Highway to Kajang town through Sungai Chua, experiences floods about four to five times a year whenever there is a heavy downpour here.

Tan said a large culvert passing through Taman Seri Kota, beside Winnie Plaza, was the cause of the floods.

“This culvert is supposed to carry rainwater from the main road to the nearby Langat River,” said Tan.

“However, this U-shaped culvert flows into a smaller V-shaped section downstream, restricting the flow of water.

“It does not make sense to have the downstream section of the drainage system become narrower

instead of wider.

He said as a result, the culvert could not drain floodwater quickly, slowing traffic down as drivers

exercise caution when driving through stagnant water.

While the issue does not seem to directly affect houses in the area, Tan said the resulting congestion along the main road was a major nuisance to nearby residents who want to get to Jalan Sungai Chua.

“This area was previously under from the Kajang constituency but following a redelineation exercise, it came under the Balakong constituency in the last general election and I wish to solve this long-standing issue for the sake of the people here,” said Tan.

He suggested that the V-shaped section of the culvert be changed into a U-shaped one, in order to widen the drainage and increase the flow of water.

“Should the council lack the funds to upgrade the drainage here, I will bring the matter up with the Selangor state government if I am given the mandate,” said Tan.
