Halimey plans to woo students back to the classrooms

-

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s Halimey Abu Bakar says he will also focus on student delinquency in Seri Setia if he wins the state by-election.

The PKR candidate said he planned to achieve this by making things better in schools.

Halimey, who grew up in the low-cost Kampung Lindungan area in the constituency, said he understood the issues faced by its folk very well.

“I suggest that public halls be used as tuition centres. Students living in low-cost flats do not have any decent place to study,’’ he said at the Pakatan operations centre in Kelana Jaya yesterday.

Halimey pledged to mobilise volunteers and tutors to guide students.

He said he believed in all schools having proper facilities.

“This is key to inspiring needy children to do their best,’’ he added.

Earlier, Halimey visited the Selangor Public Library Development Project @PJS6 in Kampung Lindungan, a RM765,000 joint pilot project between the Selangor State Library Corporation and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) completed in March. According to Halimey, the pilot project was mooted by him and former Seri Setia assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad two years ago when he was then a Petaling Jaya councillor.

The library also has a mini cooperative to promote student entrepreneurship, a hydroponics garden, prayer room, meeting room, basketball court and computer room.

Asri Atan, who is tasked with managing the library, said the old building was an abandoned public hall frequented by drug addicts.

“The library now functions as a centre for primary and secondary schoolchildren to spend their free time. They do their homework there,’’ he added.

Asri, who has lived in Kampung Lindungan for over 20 years, said there were many social problems involving children which included gangsterism and drug addiction. Halimey said he planned to build a similar public library in Lembah Subang.

“We will form a committee involving residents for this project,’’ he added.

The Seri Setia polls on Sept 8 will see a straight fight between Halimey and PAS’ Dr Halimah Ali.
