Police report over claims of ‘meddling’
Probe alleged interference in appeal, says Karpal’s daughter
PETALING JAYA: Sangeet Kaur Deo, the daughter of late DAP chairman Karpal Singh, has lodged a police report over alleged meddling by a senior judge on her late father’s sedition appeal in 2016.
She said it was a very serious allegation that must be investigated. She lodged the report at the Dang Wangi Police district headquarters yesterday.
“If necessary, a RCI (Royal Commission of Inquiry) should also be set up to investigate the alleged interference within the judiciary.
“I came across the allegation of meddling by the judge after reading a news portal report on the matter, quoting a lawyer,” she said yesterday.
Lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdullah claimed that Karpal’s sedition appeal two years ago was altered due to judicial interference by a senior judge.
He alleged the panel was asked to reverse the ruling to allow Karpal’s appeal and acquit him of the charge.
However, Mohamed Haniff did not reveal the identity of the judge.
On Feb 21, 2014, the High Court found Karpal guilty of sedition for questioning the removal of Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as Perak Mentri Besar by the Sultan of Perak.
On May 30, 2016, the Court of Appeal, in a majority decision, upheld the sedition conviction ruling that it was a serious offence involving the sovereignty of a Ruler and his prerogative powers.
If necessary, an RCI should also be set up to investigate the alleged interference within the judiciary. Sangeet Kaur Deo
The court, however, reduced the quantum of his fine from RM4,000 to RM1,800.
Karpal was the Bukit Gelugor MP when he died at the age of 73 in a road accident on April 17, 2014.
The accident occurred along the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung, Perak.
