KUANTAN: The men and women in blue are taking social media by storm with their renditions of patriotic songs in conjunction with the 61st National Day celebration.

As part of an initiative to instil the patriotic spirit among Royal Malaysia Police personnel and staff, they are urged to showcase their talents and give their best Merdeka greetings in the form of short video recordings under the #PDRMMerdekaChallenge hashtag.

To kick things off, their Facebook page features Insp Muhd Adil Ja’afar of the Pahang police contingent belting out Malaysia Baru, a song from the 1963 film Kasih Tanpa Sayang.

Insp Muhd Adil said utilising social media was a good way for the police to foster a closer relation- ship with the public.

“There is an element of entertainment in it that attracts the public’s attention and when they visit our social media pages, we can engage them.

“At the same time, we must also follow guidelines and maintain decorum as befitting the police force,” he said at his office here yesterday.

Asked why he had chosen Malaysia Baru, Insp Muhd Adil said he found the lyrics to be meaningful.

“I did not simply choose any patriotic song. Malaysia Baru reminds us that the world is not heaven and everything is just leased to us.

“The song also calls on us to love as it is a noble and normal act,” he added.

Meanwhile, Insp Muhd Adil used to be an assistant lecturer of mathematics at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kampar, Perak, before switching to law enforcement in 2013.

The 32-year-old father of two is now serving as an investigating officer with the state Commercial Crimes Investigation Department.

He urged Malaysians to learn about the country’s struggle for independence, saying that this would make them grateful and appreciate the freedom they enjoy today.

“To me, the word merdeka does not only mean that we are free from being colonised. It also refers to the way we think, live and make decisions.

“Independence is linked to civilisation. We are free in a democratic society, but what we do must still be within the lawful confines of the Constitution,” he added.

Another officer who took on the challenge is Kpl Soffwany Yusoff, who is part of Bukit Aman’s Air Wing Unit.

Kpl Soffwany, who displayed her singing talent in a YouTube video that went viral last year, sang the patriotic song Bahtera Merdeka in her video.
