STUDENTS and academicians from INTI International University’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences went on an outreach programme in Melaka to provide health check-ups.

They also visited Ayer Hitam, Yong Peng, Batu Pahat and Kangkar Bahru in Johor, to provide local communities with free health check-ups and consultation based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Physiotherapy.

The visits were spread out over a period of five months and the team worked together with local community clubs such as the Lions Club to ensure its effectiveness.

Each visit included students from TCM and Physiotherapy. They were accompanied by five TCM and two Physiotherapy academicians respectively.

During these visits, the team provided free TCM health consultations, acupuncture, physiotherapy, health screenings and also dispensed approved Chinese traditional medications.

Most local residents who took part in the outreach were aged from 35 to 60.

Faculty of Health and Life Sciences dean Prof Dr Wong Ling Shing said the local communities appreciated the free health screenings.

“It was an encouraging experience for our students who will one day be health professionals. It taught them how to be good practitioners by enhancing crucial soft skills such as listening and interacting with patients, showing empathy and working as a team.

“The programme helped them prepare for the challenges of the profession and also to give back to society,” he added.

The students and academicians previously held other outreach programmes, including a trip to Bangalore, India. The physiotherapy students were involved in volunteer social work.
