KUALA LUMPUR: Merdeka means communities coming together and showing their love for the nation, says Datuk Wan Kamaruzaman Wan Ahmad.

“Being patriotic is showing one’s love for the nation,” said the Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) chief executive officer. “For example, citizens contributing to the well-being of our country in whatever profession they are in.”

“At KWAP, our part in managing and processing pension benefits for government servants can be considered a patriotic action,” he said.

Wan Kamaruzaman, 58, added that his first thoughts about patriotism was based on a quote from the 35th president of the United States. John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”.

“We must have the willingness to work, volunteer our time and have a spirit of solidarity with all peoples in multicultural Malaysia, regardless of race or creed,” Wan Kamaruzaman said.

“We must be proud that Malaysians of all races became united during GE14 to create a better or new Malaysia.”

Wan Kamaruzaman added that patriotism was knowing when “our nation is faltering and steering it back for a better future”.

“Even being accountable to our families, communities and all levels of government is patriotism,” he said.

“For me participating in the #AnakAnakMalaysia Walk is a good platform to unite and show love for the nation.”

The Johorean said KWAP also showed its patriotism by caring for the environment.

“It is important, it is a part of who we are. At KWAP, we comply with green building parameters that reduce carbon footprint.

“Our conservation action, in a small way, can help save our natural resources, reinforcing our basic values to our nation,” he said.

Wan Kamaruzaman said a large number of KWAP employees would be joining the event to show their love for Malaysia, and at the same time make new friends.

The walk brings Malaysians of different ethnicities together to enjoy a weekend in a beautiful parkland area.

The 3.8km walk will be flagged off at 6.30am on Sept 2 at the Eco Ardence Sales Gallery, Persiaran Setia Alam, Setia Alam, Shah Alam.

The #AnakAnakMalaysia Walk is a collaboration between Malaysia’s well-known property developer Eco World Development Group Bhd and Star Media Group.

Other sponsors for the event include Panasonic (Silver Sponsor) and DRB-Hicom (Car Sponsor).

The organisers are expecting a crowd of more than 6,000 people.
