IPOH: Pupils and teachers of SJKC Min Sin in Ampang here have Malaysia at “heart”. They dedicated a giant one to the country.

Decked in white school uniforms, dark blue pinafores and red-coloured t-shirts, about 300 pupils formed the heart while 20 teachers made up the number “61” to mark this year’s Merdeka Day celebration.

Headmistress Ng Kit Chee said the feat was to instil the spirit of patriotism and love for the country among the pupils.

“We want them to always remember and love their country.

“Even more so when they are all grown up, working in other cities or abroad,” she said yesterday.

“We also hope the programme will further strengthen unity among the pupils of various races here.”

The school also has a number of Iban and Bidayuh pupils as some of their parents are army personnel.

Ng said this was the first time that the school did this since it was set up more than 100 years ago.

“The idea was mooted by the teaching staff to pay tribute to our beloved country,” said Ng.

“Other activities held in conjunction with the Merdeka Day celebration included poster drawing and a calligraphy contest,” she added.

Standard Six pupil Marvic Nick Mierza, 12, was proud to be part of the programe.

“I am happy that all my friends here did this together to show our love for the country,” he said.

His friend Wong Kin Feng, also 12, shared the same sentiment.

“We were surprised to see so many reporters at our school.”
