Nurul: Brutal assaulter a facilitator for peace talks?

PETALING JAYA: The appointment of former inspectorgeneral of Police Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor as the new facilitator for the southern Thailand peace talks has Nurul Izzah Anwar all riled up.

In a tweet yesterday, the Permatang Pauh MP vehemently opposed the appointment of the man, who was widely linked to the 1998 “black eye” incident.

In that year, her father and new PKR presidentelect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was allegedly punched by Abdul Rahim while under detention and after being fired as the deputy prime minister. It resulted in Anwar appearing in court with a darkened eye.

“I unequivocally oppose this appointment of a brutal assaulter of an innocent man as he lay there blindfolded & handcuffed – left w/ out medical attn for days. This being then lied 2 d whole world as to d victim’s whereabouts & wellbeing. Shame on those who executed this travesty,” she tweeted.

Bernama reported that Abdul Rahim replaced Datuk Seri Ahmad Zamzamin Hashim, who was previously elected to the role by the former government.

It added that Kuala Lumpur had been hosting several rounds of talks between representatives from the Thailand government and groups represented by Mara Patani (Majlis Syura Patani) to seek a peaceful resolution to years of armed conflicts in southern Thailand.

About 7,000 people were killed as a result of armed conflicts there since 2004.
