GEORGE TOWN: A series of police raids and arrests saw RM8.55mil worth of pil kuda, made from a type of methamphetamine drug, being seized in North and Central Seberang Prai since Aug 19.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Seri A. Thaiveegan said they first stumbled upon WY pills hidden in a car during an inspection in Butterworth at 4.30am on Aug 19.

Five male suspects in the car were arrested.

“Police officers found 1,600 WY pills worth RM32,000 inside the car.

“The arrest of the suspects led to another raid on the mainland last Friday and two men were arrested in Bandar Perai Jaya and Taman Kota Permai.

“This led police to the discovery of three large plastic bags containing 72,000 WY pills worth RM1.44mil inside an apartment unit in Bukit Mertajam.

“Next day, the two men took police to a store in Bandar Perai Jaya where 354,000 WY pills worth RM7.08mil were stashed there,” said Comm Thaiveegan during a press conference at the Penang state contingent police headquarters yesterday.

He said preliminary investigations on the seven male suspects, aged between 19 and 36, revealed that three of them were community college students, while another three have past crime and drugrelated records.

“We are investigating the source and where the drugs are sold, whether locally or to neighbouring countries,” Comm Thaiveegan added.

Police also seized a Proton Wira. The five suspects picked up on Aug 19 have been remanded until Friday. The other two have been remanded until Sunday.

Present at the press conference were Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid and North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor.

Comm Thaiveegan also handed out certificates of excellence to 24 policemen involved in the operations.

To date, police in Penang have seized illegal drugs worth over RM50mil.

Comm Thaiveegan, however, refuted claims that Penang was a drug trafficking hub.

“The large amount of drugs seized prove that police are hard at work,” he said during the press conference.
