MCA launches ‘Balakong Declaration’

BALAKONG: The “Balakong Declaration” – a document outlining MCA’s reform agenda in conjunction with the by-election – has been launched by the party central committee members led by party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

In his event speech, Liow said MCA accepted its defeat in the 14th General Election, but it would not run and hide.

“We appreciate the new chance given by the rakyat, that is to be the opposition,” said Liow, adding that they would be steadfast in strengthening Malaysian Chinese’ economic position.

“We have transformed, but we still hold to our basic values,” the party president said, stating that the party would still focus on issues such as Chinese education and developing Chinese culture.

The five-point document, which Liow handed to by-election campaign chairman Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun and Balakong candidate Tan Chee Teong, outlined the party’s stance on charting its own autonomous path, adding that it would work with other parties to strengthen its political position, at the same time emphasising its equal stance.

Stating that MCA had insaf (was repentant), Liow said they welcomed their new role as the opposition, and hoped that Balakong voters would support MCA in its role to check and balance the Selangor state and Federal governments.

Liow also went on a walkabout with Chew and Tan throughout the Sungai Chua locality on MCA’s “War Truck” pickup, before meeting with the Bangi MCA division leadership in the run-up to the party elections late this year.

Meanwhile, Chew said it would be a struggle for MCA in Balakong.

“Nevertheless, the by-election result this time round will be a guide and morale booster for us to continue MCA’s transformation to place itself again in mainstream politics,” she said.
