Divers Nur Dhabitah and Mun Yee deliver bronze
DIVER Nur Dhabitah Sabri was grinning broadly at the prize presentation ceremony mony.
The 19- year- old h has finally added an Asia an Games medal to her cabinet after she combined with Leong Mun n Yee to secure a bronz ze for Malaysia in the wo omen’s 10m platform synchro final at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Center last night.
Despite training together for only two days, Mun YeeNur Dhabitah came good to end the five-dive contest with 310.80 points while North Koreans Kim Kuk-hyang-Kim Mi- rae amassed 337.86 for the silver.
Reigning World Cup champions Zhang Minjie- Zhang Jiaqi, both only 14, led from the start to hand China the gold with their total of 361.38 points. China are expected to make a clean sweep of all 10 golds at stake.
Dhabitah and Mun Yee were not the first choice for the event.
They got the nod after reigning Commonwealth Games champions Cheong Jun Hoong and Pandelela Rinong pulled out due to injuries.
Dhabitah was thrilled to bits after standing proudly on the podium.
“I’ve to thank my partner Mun Yee for calming me. She is very experienced and helped me a lot today,” said Dhabitah, who also partnered Munn Yee to take bronze in the women’s 10m platform synchro at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April.
“I’m happy with my performance tonight as I got a medal in my very first event. I did not expect this as I was only told I was diving this event two days ago.”
Mun Yee was pleased to contribute another medal in her fifth Asian Games campaign.
It was her seventh medal in total.
“We did not train after the Commonwealth Games and it was a rush job, so I’m happy to get a medal.
“The pairs from China and North Korea have been competing together since the start of the year, so we knew it was almost impossible to beat them.”
Dhabitah will return today to partner Wendy Ng Yan Yee for the women's 3m springboard synchro event.
