PETALING JAYA: Portraits of Malaysia’s top leaders built entirely from Lego bricks were unveiled in conjunction with the country’s National Day celebration.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali’s Lego brick murals are the highlight of the Lego Art Exhibition, which is on from now till Sunday at Sunway Pyramid.

The exhibition was organised by Carousell and Republic of Bricks (ROB), the latter being a Lego fan interest and networking group that focuses on Lego-based projects, events and displays in Malaysia.

“Naturally, the National Day celebration is the perfect opportunity for us to engage with the Lego builders and fans in an event which highlights their creativity,” Carousell Malaysia country head Tang Siew Wai told reporters after the unveiling of the murals yesterday.

Meanwhile, ROB president Zen Chan Yang Shan said the murals reflected the diversity of the Malaysian cultures and races living together in peace and harmony, and were aimed at conveying the love for the country and promoting creativity with Lego bricks.

“A total of 9,216 pieces of lego bricks were used for the murals, which were built by ROB members in the span of two months.

“It costs approximately about RM10,000. All parts of the Lego were custom-made and most of them were ordered from Europe,” he said.

Chan said 18 unique Lego mosaics would be on display, including portraits of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo and Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

“As for now all these Lego mosaics are only for exhibition, but we plan to hand them over to the Cabinet as a gift after the exhibition ends,” he said.

Singapore-based Carousell is a mobile and web-based consumer to consumer marketplace for buying and selling new and secondhand goods.
