Chew: MCA accepts support from everyone

BALAKONG: The MCA accepts the support of all political parties and every individual, says vicepresident Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

She was responding to an online report that PAS secretarygeneral Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan was campaigning for MCA’s Balakong candidate Tan Chee Teong and said the cooperation was based on issues.

“As long as the party or individual hold universal values in line with MCA’s principles, we will be friends.

“Although there will be times when we have differing opinions,” she said.

Asked whether the cooperation would go beyond the Balakong byelection, Chew said the main priority was to look after the peoples’ welfare and focus on national development.

“We want to create a strong opposition team so they can play the check and balance role in the Selangor state assembly,” Chew said.

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had also said earlier that the party was prepared to work with other parties including PAS, DAP and PKR.

“If they want to give their sup port, we are not hypocrites,” he was quoted as saying on Aug 23.

Meanwhile, Tan criticised the allocation of funds controlled by the Selangor Mentri Besar’s office for the state’s development, which was nearly half the amount budgeted.

“For the 11th Malaysia Plan from 2016 till 2020, as much as RM4.06bil, or 58% of the RM7bil of the development allocation, was channelled through the offices of the mentri besar and state secretary,” Tan said.

He asked how state exco members could carry out their jobs if 60% of the allocation was handled by the mentri besar, and what the checks and balances were if the funds were abused.

Tan said audit reports in 2017 showed that Mentri Besar Incorporated had not followed procedures in appointing a service provider to handle an RM28mil grant for Selangor Kini and Media Selangor.
