TAIPING: A mother of two has come up with a cute way to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival – homemade cartoon-inspired snowskin mooncakes.

Ranging from various beloved Disney characters to Pikachu and Totoro, Stacy Lee Hui Ping said her inspiration came from a flakytype pastry mooncake that was found in Taiwan.

Lee, who works in the shipping industry, said the pastry mooncake with cartoon character design were quite popular in Taiwan.

“My children, age six and eight, really like cartoons.

“Whenever we travel and they see some cartoon-inspired food stuff, they would always want to buy it,” she said at her home here.

“With the festival around the corner, I just thought I would make these to make them happy,” she said.

“My children are now quite popular in their classes because of the mooncakes,” she said in jest.

Aside from the cute features, Lee said the mooncakes come in 13 flavours.

“Apart from the conventional lotus pandan and red bean, I also make them with durian, cheese, yam, dragonfruit and cranberry fillings.

She said the making process was not hard, but time consuming.

“Each of the snowskin mooncakes are hand moulded. The ingredients are similar, with added edible colouring," she said.

“I can make 30 of these within three hours," she added.

Lee said the mooncakes, which she was also selling online, have proven quite popular on Facebook.

“It is probably because there are not a lot of people making such mooncakes,” she said.

“The mooncakes are priced between RM7.80 and RM9.80 depending on the flavours," she added.

The Mid-Autumn Festival or Mooncake Festival falls on Sept 24.
