MERTAJAM: A Kulim District Health Department staff has been detained for impersonating a policeman.

Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police chief Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said a police team conducting Ops Pencegahan Jenayah in the Machang Bubok area detained the 32-year-old man at 9.20pm for behaving in a suspicious manner.

“The man, a staff of the Kulim District Health Department, was riding a Honda Ex5 motorcycle and tried to flee when the policemen introduced themselves.

“However, police managed to arrest him and found a walkie-talkie, a handcuff and two dark blue shirts with the Royal Malaysia Police logo on him,” ACP Nik Ros said.

He said they also found that the motorcycle used by the man had a false registration number and was believed to be stolen based on its engine number and chassis of the machine.

ACP Nik Ros said preliminary investigations showed that the man was using all the seized items to impersonate a policeman in the SPT district. He said the man was remanded for five days under Section 170 of the Penal Code.

ACP Nik Ros also said police detained two other men aged 30 and 36, believed to be involved in armed robberies.

Police seized a knife measuring 26cm used by them to rob their victims around SPT.

“They were detained opposite a bank in Taman Inderawasih, Prai, at about 1.20am,” he said.
