Minister meets new students
Dr Maszlee offers words of encouragement, advice at campus visits
AS students left home last weekend to start their studies at the country’s 20 public universities, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik took the opportunity to visit Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).
During his visit to UTHM. Dr Maszlee encouraged the new stu- dents to work hard and also to participate in co-curricular activities. “In facing the 4th Industrial Revolution, the students should harness their skills and be adaptable in preparing themselves for the future jobs,” he said. He also highlighted the need to create a culture of happiness, love and mutual respect for learning in both schools and universities among lecturers, teachers, students and parents.
Meanwhile, Dr Maszlee attended a cultural concert organised by the Department of Higher Education and Unimas, at the university campus and met the new students there.
The event was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Mohd Gazali Abas and Department of Higher Education director-general Datin Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir.
It was reported that Dr Maszlee addressed the students at Unimas’ Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman (DeTAR).
He said the people of Sarawak, regardless of their race, religion and culture, live together in peace, harmony and unity.
“I see that the harmonious living environment here is very strong despite the people’s many differences.
They can live together and respect each another.
“This is the true meaning of independence,” he said.
