Tsun Jin High School marks double win
HELP University’s Faculty of Law and Government played host to over 200 participants from various secondary schools throughout the country for its annual Law Olympiad at Wisma HELP.
Faculty of Law and Government dean Vasantha Punniamoorthy said: “We are very impressed with the sound reasoning, ideas and discussion from the students aged between 16 to 18 years old.”
“It is also our hope that they will improve their command of the English language through these games. “The Law Olympiad has become our signature event in Malaysia,” she added.
She added that the Law Olympiad was the brainchild of the then head of department Dr Chandraih Apparao.
The objective was to introduce school students to the idea of law as a discipline but using a fun and creative methodology through games and case studies.
Students are not required to have knowledge of the law and are judged based on their logic, common sense and reasoning abilities.
There were four challenges in the Law Olympiad namely Visitors from Outer Space, Trivia Quiz, What’s Your Verdict and Whodunnit?
Tsun Jin High School scored a double win when teams A and B were named the champion and second runner-up respectively. Team B from Chong Hwa High School was first runner-up.
The champions received RM1,500 in cash prizes, a challenge trophy as well as medals for each member. The second and third place winners received RM750 and RM500 in cash prizes together with individual medals respectively.
“We did not think we would win this competition,” said Looi Hou Wai, a representative from the Tsun Jin High School winning team.
After the competition, students and teachers were treated to a mock trial of a murder case (PP vs Monica Lee) conducted by the faculty members.
The faculty members including the dean played prominent roles in the courtroom such as the counsel, defendant, witnesses, judge and court clerk.
The purpose of the mock trial was to help students better understand the local legal system through a dramatised demonstration of the proceedings within a courtroom.
