Two pig farm operators fined RM250 each for dirty premises

GEORGE TOWN: Two pig farm operators were each slapped with a RM250 fine for failing to address hygiene at their premises in Gertak Sanggul.

Penang exco member Dr Afif Bahardin said the state Veterinary Services Department also gave them tips on ways to maintain their farms during a spot check recently.

Joining in the inspection were officers from the state Drainage and Irrigation, the Department of Environment, state Land and Mines Office and Penang Island City Council.

“The pig farms were dirty and there was an unpleasant odour in the area.

“The farms were not properly maintained and managed.

“The raw waste discharged into the beach has also affected the fishermen who depend on the coastline for their daily income.

“We will not compromise on such matters and action has been taken against the pig farmers,” said Dr Afif, who is also state Health, Agriculture and Agro- Based Industry Committee and Rural Development Committee chairman.

He was commenting on The Star’s exclusive report on Saturday about raw piggery waste polluting a 1km beach in Gertak Sanggul.

Dr Afif said it was vital for livestock entrepreneurs to maintain cleanliness to ensure Penang remains green, clean and safe for all.

Balik Pulau MP Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, who is also Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, said stern action must be taken against the errant operators.
