Cops bust syndicate, drugs worth RM500,000 seized
KUALA LUMPUR: A drug trafficking syndicate was crippled after the seizure of more than RM500,000 worth of drugs.
The success came following a tipoff by the managements of various entertainment outlets in the city.
City police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the first suspect was arrested along Jalan Cheras on Sept 14.
“The suspect then led the police to an entertainment outlet along Jalan Sungai Besi, where two more suspects were apprehended at about 12.15am the next day.
“Around RM555,273 worth of drugs were seized,” he said during yesterday’s press conference at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.
Among the drugs seized were 228 packets of ecstasy powder, 500 Eramin 5 pills and 580 sticks of marijuana cigarettes.
Comm Mazlan said the three suspects, aged between 22 and 28, were relatively new as they had only been operating for about three months.
Since they were identified as pushers, it was believed that they were getting their supplies from another source.
“One of the suspects was identified as a ‘supervisor’, while the others were ‘runners’, he said.
Comm Mazlan also expressed his thanks to entertainment outlets that had notified the police on the drug pushers, saying that it took a joint effort to rid the city of drugs.
On current narcotics statistics, Comm Mazlan said police had conducted 137 raids at entertainment centres in Kuala Lumpur alone as of August.
Some 1,532 suspects were arrested for drug-related offences, ranging from distribution to usage.
In an unrelated matter, he said police would investigate both sides following reports that Pemantau Malaysia Baru’s Datuk Lokman Noor Adam was planning to sue Dang Wangi police chief Asst Comm Shaharuddin Abdullah over his handling of a recent rally.
“We are investigating both sides, including Datuk Lokman’s claims that his microphone was broken.
“We are also investigating the rally’s organisers under the Peaceful Assembly Act, as well as for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties,” said Comm Mazlan said.
On Sept 7, Pemantau Malaysia Baru held a rally in the city over the decision to drop charges against Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng by the Attorney General’s Chambers.
A scuffle between the protesters and the police occurred during the rally.
