It’s almost perfect

Winner Farhana misses national record by a whisker

-

KEDAH weightlifter Farhana Nabila Mohd Shamsudin is a hard girl to please.

It would have been a perfect day for most athletes if they clinched two gold medals with two Malaysia Games (Sukma) record on their birthday in their final Games, even more so if they are making a comeback from a road accident.

But plucky Farhana is not an ordinary athlete.

The 20-year-old, who is competing in her third Sukma, is disappointed to miss the national record by a whisker.

Yesterday, she set new Sukma records in the girls’ 69kg category with a lift of 82kg in snatch and 104kg in the clean and jerk by wiping out Pahang Fatin Amira Mohd Nasir’s record of 75kg and 95kg respectively at Merdeka Hall in Tapah.

Both Farhana’s new Games records were only a kilogram off the national marks.

Sabah’s Kartina Dumin and Sarawak’s Tara Azahari Yeo took the silvers and bronzes in both events respectively.

Farhana, who hails from Kampung Alor Janggus, is coming back from a wrist injury following a motorcycle accident.

“I’ve never won gold medals in Sukma before. It’s great to win two golds today but everything would have been perfect if I had broken the national records, which I came so close to,” said Farhana, who celebrated her birthday yesterday.

“I didn’t expect Kartina to push me hard all the way, so I was forced to make sure I keep her at bay with my lifts rather than attempting to break the national record.”

“So, I’m disappointed because I was on good form today and it would’ve been perfect to bid farewell to Sukma with a national record.”
