> Tamil Nadu police nabbed a man who threw a shoe at a statue of a social reformer during a celebration of his 140th birthday, Tamil dailies reported. The attendees were mollified before things turned ugly.

Followers of the late activist and social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy had held events with his statues throughout the state.

At one such event, participants were shocked when a man who arrived on a motorcycle took off his shoe and threw it at Periyar’s statue and began chanting slogans disparaging him.

Policemen who were present quickly detained him before the crowd could get to him. He was taken away but the worked-up crowd staged a protest, blocking the road.

They calmed down when policemen promised to take action against the man.
