Varsity holds class with students at 5,500m in Nepalese Himalayas
JOHOR BARU: With only one year of preparation, a group of students and a lecturer from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM), Batu Pahat, succeeded in conducting a class on top of the Kala Patthar Mountain of Nepal.
The event, at a height of 5,550m above sea level, was achieved last Sunday, as the country celebrated Malaysia Day.
To mark the memorable occasion, they raised the Jalur Gemilang and university flags.
Kala Patthar is a small peak literally meaning “black rock” and located at the foot of Pumori and above Gorakshep on the way to Everest Base Camp (EBC).
Lecturer Dr Nur Kamilah Yusuf said her lecture was on “Jurutera dan Masyarakat” (Engineers and Community) which carried two credit hours.
“The most challenging obstacles were dealing with heavy rain and strong winds. It was also hard when

10° ing the day and minus - C at night,” she said.
The students on the mission were Atiq Saifullah Lokman Hakim, 21; Khairul Firdaus Mohd Talib, 21; Putra Nur Addin Abdullah, 21; and Kevin Kee Chie Huong, 22.
The rest were Ham Wen Jun, 22; Muhammad Hazman Hanafi, 21; and N. Sashven, 22.
All of them are from the Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
Before starting the climb, the team also completed their community service programme by installing solar lights in several villages around Kathmandu, Nepal.
The solar project led by Assoc Prof Dr Mustaffa Ibrahim lit the alleyways around Madrasah Asyraful Ulum and several other routes to the base camp.
“We are also very grateful for the sponsorship from Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and the trust and support given by Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik,” she added.
All team members are expected to return to Malaysia on Sunday after the 19-day mission in Nepal. — Bernama
