-

SIBLING rivalry is the reason behind Abang Afiq Yazid Abang Azman n’s superb success in the bowling competition. .

Yesterday, the Sara awakian rolled down his fourth Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold me edal, this time in the team e vent at Ampang Superbowl in Ip poh.

After trailing Federal Territories (FT) by 11 pin ns during the first three blocks on Wednesday, Abang Afiq and teammates Christopher Tiong, Uzair Irsyad Noor Azrul, Abner Loo and Brandon Ting charged back to finish with 5,859 pins for the gold.

FT came in second with 5,838 pins and Penang took the bronze with 5,757 pins.

“We all helped each other, it was a great team effort,” said Abang Afiq.

The 21-year-old had already won the mixed doubles with Gillian Lim, the boys’ doubles with Christopher and the boys’ trios with Christopher and Brandon.

Abang Afiq said the competition against his elder brother Abang Azlan Yunus Abang Azman while growing up had brought the best out of him.

“My older brother has always been better than me in bowling, I wanted to challenge him and defeat him. And right now I can defeat him,” said Abang Afiq.

“I was jealous when he used to bring back so many bowling medals and I also wanted the same. I worked very hard.”

For Uzair, the gold medal was a moment of redemption after letting slip the gold in the boys’ singles. He was leading right until the last block but a poor 139-pin cost him a medal.

“I was really down and I did badly in the doubles. The trios was the worst and I was even in tears in front of my coaches. I’m glad to get it right today.”
