KUALA LUMPUR: Thirteen members of “Geng 08” were sentenced to eight months in jail by the High Court here after they pleaded guilty to being part of an unlawful society.

Justice Azman Abdullah ordered that they serve their jail sentence from their dates of arrest, which were between March 23 and June 18.

According to the amended charge sheets, all of the accused were members of “Geng 08”, which was an unlawful society in Kuala Lumpur between Aug 23, 2013, and March 28, 2018.

The charge under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966 carries a maximum three years’ jail, a RM5,000 fine or both, upon conviction.

At the same proceeding, six men pleaded not guilty to their amended charges and claimed trial.

Justice Azman then ordered the six men to be led to the magistrate's court as the amended charges fell under the jurisdiction of the lower court.

In a proceeding at a magistrate’s court later, one man was sentenced to seven months in jail.

Magistrate Noorasyikin Sahat sentenced N. Saravanan, 30, to seven months in jail after he pleaded guilty to being part of “Geng 08”.

The others were allowed bail at RM1,800 each. Their cases have been fixed for mention on Oct 26.
