PORT DICKSON: Independent candidate Stevie Chan Keng Leong has decided to invest in a good pair of shoes to ensure his campaigning proceeds smoothly.

The social media personality, who has been using the “KasiChan” (give me a chance) phrase to garner support, said he had to invest in quality footwear as he did not have the financial clout to hold ceramah.

“I have asked all my team members to wear comfortable shoes because we are going to do a lot of walking.

“This is very important as we will need to meet as many voters as possible,” he said when met while campaigning near the wet market here.

Chan said apart from walkabouts, his team would also use social media to campaign.

“Using social media is actually easier and cost-effective,” he said, adding that he would not engage in personal attacks against his opponents.

Chan said he has become more patient and looks at things in a more positive manner after deciding to contest in the by-election.

“I have been at the receiving end from some netizens but I will take it all in good faith.

“I am mentally and physically ready for this battle,” he said.

On his plans for Port Dickson if elected, Chan said he would, among others, revive Pesta PD, which was previously held annually on a grand scale.

“I am also prepared to stay here to be able to serve the people better,” said Chan, who currently lives in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur.

The parliamentary seat was vacated by former MP Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, after he resigned on Sept 12 to make way for PKR president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to return to Parliament.

During the 14th General Election, Danyal won the seat with a majority of 17,710 votes in a three-cornered fight.

This by-election, the fourth after the May 9 polls, will see a seven-cornered fight, with Anwar hoping to make a political comeback and be in line as the next prime minister.

Polling is set for Oct 13.
