GEORGE TOWN: In spite of his physical difficulties and struggles in life, octogenarian Lim Kim Sung continues to see the best in Malaysians.

Better known as Uncle Ah San, the 83-year-old widower, who suffers from filariasis (elephantiasis) on his left leg and living on his own, said it was through his struggles that he realised there were many kind and thoughtful people around.

“Every morning, I would cross busy roads to get to Penang Hospital on my wheelchair for the daily dressing for my leg wound.

“Along the way, there are many people who notice me from a distance. They will go out of their way to help push me to the other side of the road safely.

“These people who help ... they are from all walks of life. There is no particular race which is more willing to help than the other.

“Chinese, Indian or Malay ... they’re always willing to assist me,” he said at his rented house in Jalan Gopeng here recently.

Lim said his daily struggles made him see the best in people.

“Wherever I go, there will be peo- ple helping. I am very grateful to all of them.

“I wish to thank the people who are always there to help me even though I have nothing to offer in return,” he added.

In November 2013, The Star ran a story on Lim crossing the busy Jalan Ayer Itam-Jalan Datuk Keramat junction from his rented house to Penang Hospital on his wheelchair for his daily dressing.

Lim collects and sells recyclable materials to make ends meet.

“As I am unable to walk, kind individuals will drop the recyclable materials at my place,” he said.
