Responsible free speech part of a progressive nation

- SZE LOONG STEVE NGEOW Kajang

I REFER to the article “Ruling looms over free speech” ( The Star, Sept 30).

Free speech that is constructive and responsible is a positive action. It results in constructive criticisms that give the new administration a strong and much needed sense of what people on the ground feel about the state of our nation.

Positive and negative comments are needed to ensure that the deliberation of issues can be done in a balanced, fair and conducive manner, which greatly improves our nation building process.

The historic change of government reflects the desire of the majority of Malaysians for greater accountability and democratic practices, both processes enhanced by free responsible speech.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, criticisms may not be agreeable, but necessary to call attention to an unhealthy state of things.

Hence, negative comments and feedback provide a necessary check and balance to ensure that the current government doesn’t lose track of its progressive social contract or mandate with the rakyat.

Free and responsible speech allow Malaysians to properly engage in civil, reflective debates and discussions.

To achieve this aim, we would do well to strive to widen our world view by reading or listening to opposing views. This will greatly help to reduce the undesirable echo or chamber effect, as surrounding ourselves with people and media who share similar views or beliefs with us leads to a false idea of what really may be happening in the wider community.

Responsible free speech results in a more informed society that greatly helps to promote balanced discussions and views based on transparent correct information, and not rumours, fake news or innuendos.
