Amputation has not stopped Morogen from reaching the top

KUALA LUMPUR: K. Morogen (pic) thought his life was over after he lost both his legs in a sawmill accident in Ipoh in 2011.

A timber log accidentally fell on his legs, which severely damaged both his limbs and had to be amputated.

The father of two children had to use a wheelchair to move around but he did not stop there – he went on to show that he was not an ordinary guy when he took up archery, thanks to an advice from a doctor.

And today, he is beaming with pride as a national para athlete.

The 47-year-old Morogen will be representing Malaysia for the second time in the Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, starting on Oct 6. He will compete in the men’s compound event.

Morogen, who used to work as a timber grader, said sports had changed his life.

“I was feeling so depressed after the incident that I almost gave up hope. But thanks to a doctor, who advised me to take up sports in 2012,” said Morogen.

“I’m glad I took his advice seriously and started my career in archery and I’ve never stopped. I’ve been representing Malaysia in competitions since 2013.”

“Through sports, I earn a living by getting monthly training allowance. I also get contribution from Socso (Social Security Organisation) every month.

“I am able to earn a decent living to support my wife and two children, who are still studying. I must thank the Malaysian Paralympic Council officials, coaches and teammates for inspiring me to win honours in competitions.

Morogen did well in the Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur last year by winning the compound gold in the mixed team with Nor Sa’adah Abdul Wahab and silver in the individual event.

“Winning the medals has motivated me to train much harder for the Asian Para Games in Jakarta. Malaysia have never won medals in archery either in recurve and compound and I hope to be the first.

“It will be tough but it is not impossible,” said Morogen with a smile.
