Chronology of events
Oct 3 marks an unprecedented day where a former prime minister’s wife is arrested by the MACC. It is also the day where Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor are questioned by two different enforcement agencies over the scandal-riddled 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) at the same time. The chronology of events leading to Oct 3:
May 16: Police search the private residence of Najib in Taman Duta, Seri Perdana, the Prime Minister’s Office and three units at Pavilion Residences linked to Najib.
May 18: Police seize 284 boxes containing designer handbags, luxury watches, jewellery and cash in various currencies from the premises.
June 27: It took the police a month to complete the valuation of the seizure and to count the cash. Bukit Aman CCID says it is the largest seizure in Malaysia’s history, estimated between RM900mil and RM1.1bil and comprising 12,000 pieces of jewellery, 423 watches, 567 handbags and RM116mil in cash.
May 22: MACC summons Najib to its headquarters in Putrajaya and questions him for four hours on SRC International.
May 24: Najib returns to MACC to go through a six-hour questioning.
July 3: MACC arrests Najib at his house in Taman Duta at 2.35pm to be charged over SRC International the next day.
July 4: Najib pleads not guilty at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to a charge of using his position for bribery and three charges of CBT. The charges were related to the RM42mil that allegedly went from SRC International into Najib’s personal bank account.
Aug 7: MACC questions Najib again for 45 minutes regarding SRC International.
Aug 8: Najib faces three counts of money laundering and pleads not guilty at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
Sept 19: MACC arrests Najib at 4.13pm only an hour after recording his statement on 1MDB.
Sept 20: Najib is brought to the Bukit Aman CCID headquarters for more questioning at 9.20am and is arrested by police. He is then charged in the afternoon with 25 counts of corruption and money laundering at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.
Oct 3: Bukit Aman CCID questions Najib for three hours from 10am to 1pm over 1MDB.
June 5: MACC questions Rosmah on SRC International for around five hours. This marks the first time the wife of a former prime minister is called in to give a statement over a graft probe.
Sept 26: MACC questions Rosmah again, this time on 1MDB, for 13 hours.
Oct 3: Rosmah returns to MACC again for further questioning on 1MDB and is arrested after almost five hours of questioning.
Meanwhile, police have indicated that Rosmah will be called in for questioning and to verify jewellery belonging to her that was seized.
Two jewellers have since come forward to seek the return of 47 pieces of jewellery which were delivered to Rosmah but were not paid for.
Lebanese-based jeweller Global Royalty Trading SAL filed a suit against Rosmah at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on June 26 seeking a mandatory order for 44 pieces of jewellery amounting to US$14,787,770 (RM59,831,317.40) to be returned.
Dubai-based high-end jeweller Adi Hasan AlFardan Jewellery is seeking to recover a necklace and another one with an earring set worth more than US$5mil (RM20.69mil).
