MRCS appeals to public, corporate sector for donations
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) is appealing for donations in aid of those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi.
National MCRS chairman Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz binti Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah said the target was RM2mil.
“We appeal to the public and the corporate sector to contribute.
“Monetary help is preferred as it is logistically hard to send items into the country now,” she told a press a conference at the MCRS headquarters here yesterday.
Tunku Puteri Intan said MRCS sent two personnel from its logistics department to Palu yesterday.
“They will be there for five days to check on the situation in Palu and Donggola,” she said, adding that the RM2mil would be used to provide water purification, tents and food for the first few months.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and MRCS will work together to bring aid to the badly affected areas.
Cash contributions can be made via bank transfer directly to the MRCS (International Relief Fund- Sulawesi), Maybank Account No 5144 2210 2657 or by cheque/bank draft issued in favour of Malaysian Red Crescent Society and mail it to its National Headquarters Complex, Lot PT 54, Lengkok Belfield, Off Jalan Wisma Putra, 50460 Kuala Lumpur.
Official tax-exempt receipts will be issued for all cash contributions.
It was reported that the death toll from the disaster has risen to more than 1,400, with over 2,500 people seriously injured in the 7.5 magnitude quake and deadly tsunami waves last Friday.
