Anwar wants PD back in the spotlight

-

PORT DICKSON: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has promised to bring glory back to Port Dickson by fixing its infrastructure, including Internet connectivity.

In his campaign, the PKR president-elect said the beaches here once attracted elite visitors, including Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Anwar said this was shared by Lee when he visited the country for a conference two weeks ago.

“Lee wished me all the best when he found about my intention to contest in Port Dickson.

“He told me that his father Lee Kuan Yew had once brought the family here for a private holiday when he was young.

“This means that many people know about PD and now is the time for us to restore it to its former glory and bring more development,” said Anwar in his speech at the Kopitiam Talk walkabout programme here yesterday.

Anwar was campaigning alongside DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and other top Pakatan leaders.

The Port Dickson by-election came about after its incumbent Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, 68, vacated the seat on Sept 12 to make way for Anwar to return to Parliament.

Anwar also pledged that he would create more work opportunities for locals and improve Internet connectivity.

“The Internet connection here is very poor. I will call my friend Gobind Singh (Communications and Multimedia Minister) and ask for his help to improve the Internet connectivity.

He also welcomed the move by AirAsia Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes to help make Port Dickson a top tourist destination again.

“There is hope here and we will work hard to boost more infrastructure, fix roads and drains and clean up the beaches,” said Anwar.

On Wednesday, Fernandes had said he was thrilled to see Port Dickson in the limelight, adding that he has long been an advocate in the development of this “raw diamond”.

“Its vicinity to KL International Airport makes it a potential to be the Jumeirah Beach (Dubai) of Malaysia, particularly for transiting passengers.

“Convention centres, shopping malls and resorts are just some of the projects that we believe can take Port Dickson to new heights,” said Fernandes on his LinkedIn post.
