Kan hopes to act as the third force

PORT DICKSON: Independent candidate Kan Chee Yuen is hoping that his candidacy in the by-election here will act as a third force in local politics.

“In the United States or Britain, there is a third force but not Malaysia. For more than 60 years since independence, the political scenario has had only two sides – the ruling party or the Opposition.

“Sometimes, the Government has good ideas but the Opposition opposes for the sake of opposing and they are always fighting in Parliament. I think this has to stop with the involvement of a third force,” he said.

Kan, also known as Myocho, was speaking to reporters during a press conference at the Glory Beach Hotel yesterday.

Kan said he had strategies on how a third force should function in local politics but declined to elaborate further, adding that it was still not the right time.

“But this third force will focus on policies and professional issues. It will not talk about politics.

“Transparency and accountability must be there. Those are the basics but we must move forward,” he said.

Kan also claimed that he had never accepted a single sen for his election campaign from family, friends and even strangers.

“My family members gave me a cheque for donation. I accepted it and cancelled it. But I have it as a keepsake..

“Even when strangers offered to donate, I told them it is okay. I can’t accept it. Why? Because I want to start my first step as clean as possible,” he said.

He said by declining donations, it would prevent him from being indebted to anyone on his plans for Port Dickson should he be elected on Oct 13.

Kan, who has been a management consultant for corporate and individuals since 1994, said he planned to breathe a new lease of life into Port Dickson’s economic activities by introducing education tourism.

“As an example, Penang is the fourth health tourism destination in the world. So, we don’t want to contradict tourism concepts in different states.”

Kan is among seven candidates vying for the Parliamentary seat.
