JOHOR BARU: Avid fans of Chinese calligraphy should not miss the opportunity to view the work of former Nanyang Siang Pau chief editor Chu Chee Chuan.

An exhibition displaying 50 of his best artworks over the last 10 years is now on display at the Calligraphy Society of Johor here.

“Chu is a prominent writer and prominent figure in the community.

“He is also an outstanding calligraphy artist and the founder of Chinese calligraphy in the country,” said society president Yong Kim Jung when met during the launch of the event yesterday.

Yong said he often met up with Chu, who is 96 and currently living in Singapore.

“Although Chu has focused more on writing in his career, he also has great passion for the preservation of arts and culture,” Yong said.

In 1982, Chu gathered famous calligraphy artists from across Malaysia and set up a Preparatory Committee for the Malaysian Calligraphy Society, of which he was president.

“Three years later, the government approved the society. It was a historical moment and the founda tion of all calligraphyrelated activities in the country,” Yong said.

He added that a book titled The Retrospective Collection of Chinese Calligraphy by Chu Chee Chuan was published to showcase all of Chu’s artwork and achievements.

Retired Court of Appeal judge Datuk Low Hop Bing, who officiated the event, said he was inspired by Chu’s artwork and column, which touches on issues such as politics, education and culture.

The exhibition is located at 16A, Jalan Gaya 28, Taman Gaya here between 10am and 4pm until Oct 10.
