Jobless man gets jail for pulling Macau scam on coffeeshop owner

-

SIBU: A jobless man was sentenced to 24 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to two charges of cheating a coffeeshop operator using a Macau scam tactic.

Mohd Nadzrin Zaidel, 23, of Jalan Astana, Kuching, was charged under Section 424 of the Penal Code to cheating a 43yearold coffeeshop operator an amount of RM10,479.48.

In the first charge, magistrate Mohd Faizal Che Saad sentenced the accused to 12 months jail and a fine of RM3,000, in default six months jail.

As for the second charge, he was slapped with a jail term of 18 months and a RM3,500 fine, in default six months jail.

But Mohd Faizal ordered the jail sentence to run concurrently. As the accused could not pay the fine, he would serve a twoyear jail term.

According to the facts of the case, on Jan 17 this year, the operator received text messages, stating that his credit card had been used by someone at KLIA and Genting Highlands.

Subsequently, he called a phone number given by the accused.

A woman who identified herself as Miss Wong from “Bank Negara” told him that his personal information had been misused.

On the pretext of assisting him, Miss Wong directed the man to transfer his money to another account.

He then lodged a police report after finding out that it was a scam.
