JOHOR BARU: The state government has instructed all 16 local councils to conduct an immediate inspection of the drainage system with the monsoon season just around the corner.

State Local Government, Science and Technology Committee chairman Tan Hong Pin said he has reminded the councils to ensure the drainage system is in good condition.

“There have been heavy rainfalls in several parts of the state within the last couple of days. If the drainage system is clogged with rubbish, it may result in flash floods and this is what we want to avoid,” he said.

Tan said besides the drainage system, local councils should also carry out inspections in residential areas and major roads around here.

He said tall trees and its branches should be trimmed as it might pose a danger to the public during strong winds and heavy rainfalls.

Johor Fire and Rescue Department public awareness and fire safety branch chief Azman Shah urged the public to avoid going to coastal areas, rivers or even lakes during the monsoon season.

He said people must be vigilant and look out for warning signs such as a sudden change in weather patterns such as dark clouds.

“Check out the weather condition before entering sites such as waterfalls or rivers as the water can rise in an instant,” he said.
