Efforts taken to improve police welfare

-

AS a police retiree, I welcome Deputy Home Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman’s assurance that efforts are being undertaken to improve the welfare of our police personnel, “Azis: Study to improve police welfare under way” ( The Star, Oct 9).

There is an urgent need for the government to look into this matter as the police force is in a dire state of affairs in terms of logistics, quarters for staff and buildings.

We hope the deputy minister conducts more visits to police stations all over the country to view for himself the true condition of the buildings and family quarters.

Go to the transport branch and you will see a great number of broken down police vehicles waiting to be repaired. Investigating officers have to source for themselves stationery like A4 papers, ink jet for printers and other necessities to ensure their work is done.

A whopping RM9bil was allocated to the police in Budget 2018. With this allocation, we had every reason to believe that the force would be able to function without major hindrances. Sadly, it was not to be!

The country needs a formidable police force to ensure continued peace and stability, which will help enhance economic growth. The Home Affairs Ministry must take heed of the predicaments faced by the police and take every effort to make it a force to be reckoned with. DATUK WEE BENG GEE Petaling Jaya
