KUALA LUMPUR: There were many firsts at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. It was the first time the prestigious global event was held in Malaysia, and more importantly, the first time the world got to see Samsung’s first quad-camera and triple-camera smartphones.

The electronics giant unveiled the Galaxy A7 that has three rear cameras – an 8-megapixel sensor with a 120° ultra-wide lens, and 24-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors that work in combo to produce the Bokeh effect.

The Bokeh effect allows users to adjust the depth of field either before or after taking the shot to make the subject stand out.

The A9 has all three cameras and an additional 10-megapixel sensor with telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Both phones have a 24-megapixel front camera with an adjustable LED flash for taking selfies.

“Building on our legacy in smartphone camera development, we’re introducing next-generation technology across our entire Galaxy portfolio to give more consumers the opportunity to experience cutting-edge innovation.

“We’re excited to deliver on this promise and debut world-leading smartphone camera technology with the Galaxy A9,” said DJ Koh, president and CEO of IT and mobile communications division at Samsung Electronics.

At the launch, popular South Korean girl band Ace of Angels (AOA) drew cheers from the crowd as the band members shared their experience of using the newly unveiled smartphones.

The six-member gang took turns to talk about their favourite features, and they unanimously decided that the Pro-Lighting, which helps hide blemishes, was their favourite when taking selfies.

The loudest cheer was reserved for their performance of Bingle Bangle, and the lively mood continued as South Korean heartthrob Yook Sung-jae took to the stage.

The singer/actor, famous for his role in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, used the Galaxy A9 camera to snap wide-angle photos with the audience, as well as to try the Bokeh effect.

The A7 has a 6in display, 2.2GHz octa-core processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage and 3,300mAh battery.

The A9 has a fingerprint sensor on the back and also uses facial recognition to unlock the device, while the A7 has a fingerprint scanner embedded on the power button at the side.

The A9 has 128GB memory that is expandable to up to 540GB with a microSD card and a 3,800mAh battery that supports fast charging.

Both A7 and A9 run on Android 8.1. The Galaxy A7 is available now for RM1,299 in Blue, Black, Pink and Gold while the Galaxy A9 will come out next month in Caviar Black, Lemonade Blue and Bubblegum Pink.
