June Wei spoils the party for soon-to-wed Kashyap

-

PETALING JAYA: National shuttler Cheam June Wei spoilt the party for soon- to- wed P. Kashyap by dumping the former world No. 6 out of the Dutch Open badminton championships in Almere, Holland.

June Wei upset the eighth- seeded Kashyap 21- 19, 14-21, 21-8 in 57 minutes to set up a last-four clash against last year’s European junior champion Toma Junior Popov of France.

It was sweet revenge for June Wei as he was pipped by Kashyap to the Austrian Open crown earlier in February.

Earlier this week, the media in India reported that Kashyap, 32, will tie the knot with women’s singles ace Saina Nehwal on Dec 16.

Kashyap, once the top men’s singles shuttler in his country, won the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medal and was a quarter-finalist at the 2012 London Olympics.

June Wei, the world No. 93, will be now be aiming to reach his fourth final of the year and hopes Holland will again be a lucky destination.

In April, he won the lower-tier Dutch International for his first international senior title.

He also made it to the final of the Finnish Open, also in April, but lost to teammate Leong Jun Hao.

Soong Joo Ven failed to join June Wei in the semi-finals after his gallant run was ended by home favourite and top seed Mark Caljouw in the quarter-finals.

Joo Ven went down 12- 21, 16-21 in 41 minutes.

Caljouw will face another Indian, Sourabh Varma, for a place in the final.
