ONE of the most popular golf clubs in the country, Kelab Golf Negara Subang (KGNS), this week launched the celebrations of its 50th anniversary with the unveiling of the logo and outlining a string of activities that will be highlighted by a golf game and gala dinner.

KGNS president Tengku Datuk Shamsul Bahrin presented a detailed account of the club’s beginnings, its development since and where it stands in today’s game.

Also present were Chandrasegaran Arumugam, Jasvinder Singh Bhatt, Raymond Teoh, Ding Meng Sieng, Michael Hong, Gobinathan Nair and Ananthan Rajoo, who each shared their thoughts on how they came to join the club and in some cases, what stood out most for them about KGNS, which has become an iconic venue in the region.

A key factor to emerge from the launch was how the club came into existence and here Tengku Shamsul spoke of the country’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, playing a leading role in the setting up of the club after Independence.

“It was at his instigation and his foresight that the club came into being,” said Tengku Shamsul.

“It all started a few years earlier and by 1968 it was formally opened.”

He added that a fun day for some 150 children from five orphanages in the Klang Valley was planned yesterday.

Tengku Shamsul also noted that a golf game was scheduled for next Saturday, and to be followed by a gala dinner the following day, Sunday.

“These events are part of the celebrations and we have also invited distinguished guests from public sector and reciprocal affiliated clubs, both local and international.”

Chandrasegaran Arumugam, a member of the management committee, said they were particularly proud that the club had evolved to “become one which was family orientated” and included numerous facilities and services for the membership that stood at 5,500.

“Among the main things that one gets a feel of at this club, is that it’s like a home away from home.

“There is always a friendly atmosphere that envelopes the place, so much so that if you wanted to play but didn’t have a mate to do so, you’d almost always be welcomed to join a two- or three-ball that is teeing off,” added Chandrasegaran , who is also chairman of the Social & Recreation sub-committee.

Jasvinder, chairman of the House & Maintenance/Pro Shop sub-committee, said the club went to great lengths to “try and get everything in tip-top condition”.

“This is a massive task, but it’s also one that we have taken on with much enthusiasm.

“And it is pleasing to note that the club over the past few years had done well to improve things around the place, like enhance the ambiance with the renovation of the golfers’ terrace, among other things.”

Chairman of the Disciplinary and Membership sub-committees, Ananthan said he felt the club was in a “good and strong place” at the moment.

“But as we all know in life, we must maintain the good and always look for ways to improve on it. That’s what our membership deserves,” added Ananthan.
