Nurturing talent, developing capabilities
EXXONMOBIL Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc strongly believes in nurturing local talent, developing capabilities and enabling significant transfer of technology while also investing in various community causes in its areas of operations.
The company is committed to working with various government and non-governmental agencies in Terengganu to help support the state’s socio economic goals.
To this end, ExxonMobil has been active in contributing towards educational programmes, especially in the areas of math, science and English language development for the younger generation, as well as improving health services and safety practices in Terengganu.
It is providing RM513,000 in contributions to support various educational and human capital development programmes in Terengganu.
The contributions, of which RM353,000 will go towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes, were presented by ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc president Edward Graham.
“ExxonMobil has had a long business presence in Terengganu, which has played host to our operations for more than 50 years.
“Through a variety of ongoing strategic investments, we have worked closely with various partners to help develop quality human capital and increase awareness of STEM subjects.
“We continue to focus on initia- tives that help identify future STEM talents and to motivate young people to consider future careers in these fields, which are critical for Malaysia in achieving its developmental goals,” said Graham.
The 2018 STEM contributions include the ExxonMobil-Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) STEM Club @ Terengganu programme, to train primary and secondary math and science teachers as STEM master trainers and enhance the teaching of math and science in schools using a STEM integrated approach. The approach refers to the integration of the STEM elements in teaching, inquiry based learning and making hypothesis through project orientation.
The Terengganu-ExxonMobil Mathematics Innovation Challenge, an annual STEM competition co-organised by ExxonMobil and the Terengganu Education Department. The competition requires student participants to apply STEM knowledge and skills with the usage of the Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) software to create innovative solutions to address daily living problems.
The ExxonMobil STEM Awards with the Terengganu Education Department, which recognise and award students, schools and districts in Terengganu that excel in pure science subjects (Additional Maths, Physics, Biology and Chemistry) in the annual SPM examinations.
The Spark Your Creativity Challenge competition, a joint effort between ExxonMobil and Terengganu Science and Creativity Centre to encourage students to develop inventive and innovative thinking skills, as well as incorporating STEM principles into creative team projects.
ExxonMobil also continued its support for initiatives to improve English language proficiency among students in Terengganu.
During the ceremony, the company presented a contribution of RM75,000 to fund the annual English Camp with English Teaching Assistants where students practise and use English in a fun and non-threatening environment.
It also donated RM85,000 to refurbish the Children’s Corner in Perpustakaan Awam Terengganu as well as RM80,000 to Yayasan DiRaja Sultan Mizan to support an entrepreneurship training programme for single mothers and young women from low income families to produce and market products based on kelulut bee honey.
The company also contributed RM52,000 to support the state’s Teachers Day Awards in May this year. The awards provide recognition for outstanding members of the education fraternity in the state including teachers, school administrators, education officers as well as parent-teacher committees.
On the whole, total contributions by ExxonMobil to Terengganu for 2018 amounts to RM645,000.
Also present were Principal Assistant Director for English Language Wan Zuraidi Che Wan Zaid, Kemaman district education officer Idris Bidin, Perpustakaan Awam Terengganu director Marzialina Mohamed and representatives of each community programme.
