Wee Wern stamps class over Turnbull to rule in Queensland

-

PETALING JAYA: National squash player Low Wee Wern bagged her fourth consecutive Professional Squash Association (PSA) title at the Queensland Open in Australia.

The 28-year-old was clearly a class above Australian Jessica Turnbull and silenced the home crowd with an 11-6, 11-5, 11-6 win in 24 minutes.

It was certainly a satisfying achievement for Wee Wern, who only returned in July, after being sidelined for 20 months due to a knee injury.

Australia is also proving to be her favourite hunting ground for titles as it is her third one in the bag.

After winning the Malaysian Open, she went on to Australia to bag the Tasmanian and Australian Open titles – all over three consecutive weeks from July to August.

Her tournament victories saw her make a massive jump in the world rankings from 254th to 54th in August.

She is on track to break into the top 50 of the world rankings before the end of the year.

“I did well to win the final match 3-0. And now I’m on track to reach the top 50 before the year end. I only started in July, so to break into the top 50 within a few months is good for me.”

With the win against Turnbull, Wee Wern has also stretched her unbeaten streak in the PSA to 20 matches – going back to the Malaysian Open.

As the tournaments so far have been the lower-tier ones, Wee Wern is eager to get back to playing in bigger tournaments and facing tougher challenges.

“Yes, I’ve been playing in smaller tournaments but I need them to help me get back into playing in the bigger ones.

“Honestly, I’m not playing the way I would like to just yet but it’s part of the process and I will have to keep working on it.”
