‘Halt projects to stop landslides’
Xavier: No more new development in Camerons will be good
IPOH: Both the Perak and Pahang governments must stop issuing permits for agriculture or development purposes in Cameron Highlands to prevent landslides and other disasters from occurring, says the Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister.
Dr A. Xavier Jayakumar said Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah had directed Perak to do so on the land under their jurisdiction.
“And now, I really hope that Pahang will follow suit,” Xavier told reporters after Sultan Nazrin proclaimed Kinta Valley as a national Geopark at an event held at Gunung Lang yesterday.
Among those present were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, and State Tourism, Arts and Culture committee chairman Tan Kar Hing.
Xavier said he also hoped that both states would tighten their enforcement on encroachment, and those found guilty of carrying out illegal farming or other activities should face stern action.
“We need to use the full power of the law to make sure they stop such illegal activities.
“We have to check on the stability of the hill station, and later come up with a solution agreed by both the state governments.
“We must ensure that the future of Cameron Highlands is guaran- teed, and its sustainability protected,” he added.
With the monsoon season in full swing, several landslides were reported at the hill. Just last week three Myanmar nationals were found buried alive after a landslide occurred at their quarters in Kuala Terla.
On the Geopark, Xavier said Kinta Valley consisted of about 1,952sq km, covering both the Kinta and Kampar districts.
“The ministry will work closely with the state government to ensure this heritage is well taken care of.
“With it being declared as a national Geopark, we are hoping to get more tourists to visit the area,” he added.
Xavier said more exhibitions and events should be held to inform the people about the Geopark that also has a rich heritage, biodiversity, archaeology, history, arts and culture.
“Enforcement and maintenance of the Geopark is crucial,” he added.
