Aaron-Wooi Yik make flying start despite jetlag
PETALING JAYA: Jet lag did not stop men’s doubles pair Aaron ChiaSoh Wooi Yik from getting off to a flying start at the French Open.
And the youngsters are hungry for more – a place in the quarter-finals.
Despite having a late flight to Paris and without much rest, the youngsters took to the court within 24 hours of their arrival on Tuesday and came through a tense battle against Americans Philip ChewRyan Chew with a sensational 27-25, 21-17 win.
After getting past the first hurdle, they were relieved to get a full day’s rest on Wednesday. .
“We’re actually doing quite well and the jetlag was not a big problem, so everything is well here,” said Aaron.
“We had more than enough time to rest and get ready for our next match. .”
The duo are the remaining men’s doubles pair after Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi went down fighting to Taiwan’s Liao Min-chun-Su Chingheng 21-16, 17-21, 16-21.
Joining Aaron-Wooi Yik in the second round of the French Open are national mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who had to come back from a game down to overcome Germans Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Herttrich in the first round. The world No. 9 went down 11-21 in the first game but remained calm to bounce back and win the next two games 21-12, 21-6 to send the world No. 18 pair packing. Soon Huat-Shevon will play English pair Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith in the second round. Ellis- Smith upset Ricky Karandasuwardi-Debby Susanto of Indonesia 21-18, 21-8 in the first round. Soon Huat-Shevon are the sole mixed doubles pair in the competition after compatriots Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying were sent packing in the first round by Robin Tabeling-Cheryl Seinen of Holland 21-19, 18-21, 18-21.
