JOHOR BARU: There is a possibility that 40 MPs from Umno might jump ship and join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

Bersatu’s Supreme Council leader Datuk A. Kadir Jasin said the issue was discussed during the party’s meeting held in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

He revealed in a blog post that 40 Umno MPs had met with Bersatu chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“However, we have yet to make any decision to accept them as our party members,” Kadir told reporters during the opening of Tebrau Bersatu division’s meeting here yesterday.

Also present at the meeting was Tebrau Bersatu division chief Mazlan Bujang who is also Johor Works, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee chairman.

He did not reveal the identities of the MPs, adding that most of them could be subjected to investigations by the authorities over several issues.

Kadir said the only way for them to join Bersatu was to leave Umno and become independent MPs first.

“They should resign and join us as an individual and not as a grouping,” he said, adding, however, that there was no guarantee they would be accepted as the party’s members.

Meanwhile, Mazlan said the crooked bridge project to replace the Johor Causeway could improve water flow along the Straits of Johor as demolishing the Causeway would allow seawater to flow along the narrow strait.

“It will also save money as the federal government has to spend more than RM100mil every two years to clean up the culverts under the Johor Causeway,” said Mazlan.
