THE Volvo World Golf Challenge (Malaysia) again proved a huge success with more than 110 players in the field, funds raised for the folks in Palu, Indonesia, and Andy Hii Sik Kiong and Low Seng Chee securing holiday golf packages to Australia.

Sik Kiong, from Demeter Logistics Sdn Bhd, won the tournament at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club in Kota Kemuning on countback from Simon Wong Chan Wah of Chip Seng Heng Enterprise Sdn Bhd. The 10-handicapper put paid to the aspirations of Wong (13hcp) on countback.

Raymond Yoong from Freight Mark (M) Sdn Bhd, also playing off a 10 handicap, was third. He managed 36 points on the day.

Sik Kiong, who earned himself a visit to Brisbane, Australia with the win, said after his victory: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been crowned the champion of the Volvo World Gold Challenge this year.

“The Challenge is something we look forward to every year, not just for the exciting prizes offered, but also because we know that by participating we are playing a part in contributing to a good cause.”

For their efforts on the fairways and greens, Wong received a trolley bag while Yoong was rewarded with a wedge.

Low’s prize came by way of a grand lucky draw and he will travel to Australia with the tournament champion Sik Kiong and Volvo Malaysia managing director Mitch Peden.

Commenting at the prizegiving ceremony, Peden said: “It is truly wonderful to see such amazing support for our annual golf tournament. It’s been going for 11 years now and still going strong.

“The Volvo World Challenge is more than just a sporting event. It signifies our long-standing commitment to our business partners as well as our commitment to charitable causes.”

The Volvo World Challenge is an annual event that offers golfing enthusiasts an opportunity to compete for the grand prize of a golf trip to Brisbane as well as to attend the Brisbane Truck Show in May.

It also provides Volvo Trucks customers and business partners the chance to test their golfing skills while contributing to a worthy cause.

The event had the funds raised from sales of official Volvo merchandise donated to Palu for its rebuilding efforts. Palu and Donggala in central Sulawesi were devastated by a tsunami which was triggered by an 7.7 earthquake on Sept 28.

Combined with a bulls-eye competition and a private collection from Volvo Trucks Malaysia staff, a total of RM10,000 was raised.

“This is a great show of solidarity - the coming together of customers, partners and Volvo staff - and it further strengthens the charitable aspect of the Challenge,” said Peden.

Since its inauguration in 1988, the tournament has had more than one million golfers from around the world take part and it continues to be an exciting and competitive event.
