SMK St Teresa needs funds for restoration

-

SMK ST Teresa is seeking additional funding from the Education Ministry in the form of grants to cover the reconstruction of school buildings damaged in a fire two years ago.

Board of management chairman Thomas Huo Kok Sen said SMK St Teresa which was established in 1885, is one of the oldest schools in the country.

According to a Bernama report, the school needed RM8.2mil for the reconstruction of administrative blocks, classrooms and a multi-purpose hall.

“The total fund collected has reached RM3.2mil but falls short of RM600,000 to cover the first phase costing RM3.8mil.

“The first phase will start at the end of this year and is expected to be completed by December 2020.

“We have to rebuild this school in phases due to a lack of funds,” he said when announcing that a grand dinner for “Let's Rebuild St Teresa” will be held.

Huo hoped that the public, particularly the school's former students as well as private companies would contribute to the fund by purchasing tickets for the dinner.

The “Let’s Rebuild St.Teresa’ Grand Dinner 2018” will be held at 7.30pm on Nov 16 at Colosseum, Level 2, Pullman Hotel, Kuching.

This event is held as part of fund raising for the rebuilding of the school hall, which was burnt down in October 2016. In the incident, the fire destroyed the assembly hall, staff room, library, sewing room, Living Skills workshop, music room, counselling room, surau, printing room and toilets.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to attend the event.

Tickets for the dinner are available from RM150, RM300 and RM500 per person. For information on the tickets, contact Kiew Lee Chin at 019 894 1923 or Tan Pek Huang at 016 8898113.
