Zuraida: Party must stop denial syndrome

-

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice-presidential candidate Zuraida Kamaruddin says the party must come off its “denial syndrome” and address its troubled polls.

Describing the use of a jamming device during the voting at the Kuala Selangor division on Sunday as “very serious sabotage”, she said police confirmation of it proved that some candidates were very worried about losing.

She said the jammer was allegedly placed by persons with vested interest to sabotage the party’s e-voting system.

“The party election is critical now,” she told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

The Housing and Local Government Minister said she would not be surprised if jammers were used to sabotage the polls in other divisions.

“I was surprised that the Kuala Selangor election had to be cancelled, which is very demoralising because people have made arrangements and lots of preparation.

“It takes a lot of effort and the decision has to be reviewed ... they are very upset,” she said, referring to party members.

A police report was lodged by a Kuala Selangor PKR candidate after a jammer was found on the floor of the hall where the e-polling was held.

It had a metal casing with six antennas and labels that read “4G” and “WiFi”.

Kuala Selangor police chief Md Asri A Wahab confirmed that investigations found that the jammer was a Mobile Phone Jammer 6 Antennas.

The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for sabotage.

Zuraida, the incumbent Wanita chief who is aligned with deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, said she did not know what was going to happen in Sabah and Sarawak.

“It involves rural areas and the (Internet) line is bad, and they (party) said they are going to do (e-voting) offline.

“But it’s not foolproof and I’m sceptical as it might cause more problems and delays,” she said.

Zuraida also hit out at Dr Syed Husin Ali, who is chairman of PKR’s Objection, Appeals and Disciplinary Committee, for playing down the internal conflict and problems involving the polls.

She said his remarks that the problems were not serious were “akin to comments made by leaders of the former Barisan Nasional government”.
