Bukit Aman to handle molest case involving MP

KANGAR: A Member of Parliament from Perlis will be called to give his statement at Bukit Aman today over a molest case, which an NGO has accused the police force of covering up.

Perlis police chief Senior Asst Comm Noor Mushar Mohamed said the suspect was now in Kuala Lumpur to attend to certain political matters.

“As such, we have requested the assistance of Bukit Aman to take his statement on the case.

“I have also appointed a special police officer to handle the case and it will be treated like a normal case,” he said yesterday.

He said the MP’s statement would be managed by the Bukit Aman Sexual, Women and Child Investigations Division (D11).

Earlier, SAC Noor Mushar denied that police were attempting to cover up the sexual case but that the investigation was being kept confidential according to procedure as the victim involved was a minor.

He said police did not take sides just because the suspect was a VVIP and stressed that any individual involved in crime would be brought to justice.

“Police are conducting the case under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and when we have completed our investigation, we will hand it over to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,” he said.

Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (Mywatch) chairman Datuk R. Sri Sanjeevan earlier tweeted about the case, questioning why the MP was still not arrested when the victim had already lodged a police report.

It is learnt that a police report was lodged, alleging the 15-year-old victim had been molested by the MP but that this was subsequently withdrawn by the victim’s family.

SAC Noor Mushar said although the victim’s family had withdrawn the report, the investigation must go on and any understanding reached between the victim’s family and the suspect was not related to the police.

“I want to warn, especially to Sanjeevan, not to interfere in investigations and not to accuse police of not doing their duty,” he said.
