TI-M: We’re on the right track to fight corruption

KUALA LUMPUR: Under the administration of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, issues involving corruption have been taken seriously in all aspects, said Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) secretary-general Dr Muhammad Mohan.

The procurement area had been identified as one of the most vulner- able elements that helped expose corruption activities, he said.

This was among the issues raised at the Anti-Corruption Summit 2018.

“Among other highlights is that the Anti-Money Laundering Act, introduced in 2001, has been taken seriously and any money laundering activity will face legal action,” Dr Muhammad said.

He pointed out that issues related to illegal immigrants were also linked to corruption.

Regarding the corporate liability provision of the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission Act, which will take effect in 2020, Dr Muhammad said more awareness and education were needed to emphasise this provision.

It was reported that the government had proposed amendments to this Act that would make corporations liable for corrupt practices of its associated persons.

Themed “Good Governance And Integrity For Sustainable Business Growth”, yesterday’s event attracted some 500 participants.

The speakers at the event included TI-M president Datuk Akhbar Satar, Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali, former Petro Saudi employee Xavier Andre Justo and anti-corruption adviser to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime – South-East Asia and Pacific Francesco Checchi. — Bernama
